Promoters of the designation say the Corps of Engineers could be blocked forever from reviving the now discredited Salem Church Dam proposal, and that protective easements which would accompany scenic designation would prevent the sort of commercialized recreation which has transformed so many once beautiful spots on our earth into something vastly, and hideously, different— from Hawaii to Yellowstone, from Niagara to the South Carolina Islands.
This area abounds in scenic and natural wonders, but these assets can’t continue without militant attention to their preservation. The modest, socalled “wilderness” proposal for Shenandoah Park would be one way; the “scenic river” designations for the Rappahannock and Rapidan would be another.□
