THIS IS the way prospects for Virginia farm prices looked to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce on Friday. The Department offers it to farmers with the warning that no one can predict prices and be right all the time.)
CATTLE — Cattle prices continue to show some advancement in recent weeks. Cattle feeders have indicated plans to reduce fed marketings more sharply in the months ahead. Intentions for April-June feedlot cattle to be marketed is the lowest for that period since 1965 and well below the level of the past nine months. Record inventories indicate that cattle slaughter supplies are potentially large, with a small proportion of slaughter coming from feedlots.
Cattle slaughter in the upcoming months will be subject to more than the usual amount of variability, and a lot will depend on weather and other short term market conditions.
