THE COMMISSION plans to pay for the rest of the cost of the purchase from hunting and fishing license fee funds, and from federal wildlife restoration funds, which are derived from a manufacturers’s excise tax on sporting arms and ammunition.
The Nature Conservancy is a non-profit organization that frequently assists federal, state and local agencies in acquiring land for wildlife management, natural areas, parks and other conservation purposes. In the past, the Conservancy has been instrumental in the acquisition of the Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, the expansion of Virginia’s park program, and the preservation of offshore islands along the Eastern Shore, in addition to assisting in the acquisition of state wildlife management areas.
Public ownership of this portion of the Rappahannock, said Phelps, will preserve the unique scenic, historic and recreational values of the area. It will also provide public access to the Rappahannock ’ River for fishing and boating as well as a new public hunting area in Northern Virginia, he added.
Phelps said the purchase of the two tracts is considered particular important and timely by the Game and Inland Fisheries because the speculative price of land on the Rappahannock is increasing rapidly. The purchase is also considered to be a major help in the effort to protect both the
