“SAVE THE Rappahannock, and dam the Engineers!” proclaims a song sung by the Float Fishermen of Virginia.
The Corps of Engineers presently represent no threat to the Rappahannock River, but the Float Fishermen, who were active in the fight against the proposed Salem Church Dam, are now battling for the proposed State Scenic River designation of the Rappahannock and Rapidan Rivers, so that the corps or any other engineers won’t dam, develop and pollute the rivers.
To help their cause Float Fishermen from all over the state, and some from North Carolina, hosted a group of state legislators, state and local officials, and members of the press to a trip down the Rappahannock River last weekend. Some 60 people made the canoe journey down the Rappahannock Saturday from Remington to Quail Hollow Farm, south ofSumerduck.
The Float Fishermen had planned to take the group farther down the river Sunday, to the Rappahannock’s confluence with the Rapidan, but wet weather canceled that part of the trip. It wasn’t that anyone was afraid of getting wet, or of the river flooding, but the trucks and cars carrying the canoes wouldn’t have been able to drive
