Even so, the one-day trip did enough to excite a number of legislators and officials to the wonders of white water and the natural, undeveloped beauty of the Rappahannock. Apparently busy with other affairs, few legislators and officials from areas directly around the portions of the Rappahannock and Rapidan under scenic river study, were able to attend the canoe trip, or “float.” But strong support for the protection of the rivers was expressed by legislators from the urbanized areas of Northern Virginia. Loudoun State Senator Charles Waddell and Fairfax Senator Clive Duval were on hand, as was Fairfax Delegate Tom Rothrock. There were also legislators from Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach and Richmond.
ACCORDING to Float Fishermen President Pete Rowe of Norfolk, more than 200 persons belong to the loosely organized group of sportsmen and conservationists, sharing “a common love for floating and fishing free-flowing rivers and streams.” The Float Fishermen are basically organized to enjoy and work for the protection of the state’s “wild and scenic rivers.” There are Float Fishermen
