The child was found around 2 a.m. Friday morning, strangled with a leather belt, his own, according to Culpeper Sheriff R. F. Peters, and with a fractured skull. An autopsy was performed by medical examiner Dr. James Byers of Fairfax, but Sheriff Peters declined to comment on its results. He would neither confirm nor deny a report by the Culpeper Star-Exponent that the child had been sexually assaulted.
As of 11 a.m. Wednesday morning (yesterday) the Culpeper Sheriff would say only that no arrest had been made and that the investigation is continuing. He did say that there was evidence and clues and a statement would be made if and when it was appropriate. □
