could be raised by 20 feet because it would have no adverse impact on the scenic river, and that no new structures will be allowed on the main stem of the Rappahannock, and localities would have to depend on tributuary damming or some other means of water supply .
This recommendation would rule out the possibility of building the proposed Salem Church Dam, which was dropped by the Corps of Engineers last year because it was too expensive. The recommendation would not affect Fauquier’s plans to build a dam on the Rappahannock near Waterloo, which is above Remington.
The COR staff’s tentative recommendation also includes a proviso that scenic river designation shall not prevent the construction of a dry reservior dam near Fredericksburg for the purpose of flood protection. The river corridor width will be determined by a line delineating the 100-year flood level and the primary reliance for protecting this corridor will be local zoning regulations, recommended the COR staff.
The COR staff also recommended that a boat launch be located near Remington and three primitive camping areas, all on public land on the Rappahannock, be built. No cost figures for these proposed facilities have been revealed.
Following the informational meetings, the COR’s Citizen Advisory Committee will make its recommendation on the proposed Scenic River designations of the Rappahannock and RapidanRivers. COR then hopes to hold several statewide public hearing in October, before making a recommendation to the Governor and the General Assembly.□
