AT THE suggestion of James Kilpatrick, Rappahannock’s Board of Supervisors is asking the County Historical Society to help restore historic old names to county roads and highways, which now are known mostly by their state numerical designations.
A letter from Kilpatrick complained that substitition of numbers for road names represents a loss of history and tradition for the county, and he suggested that the old names be researched and that they be posted on “appropriate markers” installed by the county and maintained by the Highway Department.
Chairman Pete Luke said he agreed wholeheartedly With the suggestion, noting that such designations as “F-T Valley Road” were far to be preferred over the cold numbers “231.” He felt historic road names helped people develop a keener “sense of place.”
Several people who were attending the Supervisors’ meeting for the annual secondary road hearing agreed with Luke, and so did Supervisor Clarence Baldwin, who confessed that he couldn’t remember many of the road numbers.
