GUEST also stressed that citizen activists can accomplish a great deal without help from government, at any level, but his point about the need to do “a P-R job” for the cause of historic preservation and good planning practices in general, is one that should be heeded. Indeed, it illustrates the difference between a community like Leesburg, which has initiated some preservation efforts, and Warrerjfon, which has not, with the exception of private projects.
In Leesburg, citizens and businessmen are convinced of the value of historic preservation, and they’ve had some experience that bears out the premise. In Warrenton, most businessmen and citizens seem to be unconvinced, to the point where efforts for historic zoning have been resisted, and esthetic appeals against further inroads on the still gracious and historic center of the town fall on deaf political ears.
Let’s hope the ‘‘P-R job” called for by Guest is forthcoming, and that it is successful. Too much of this area’s legacy has already been sacrificed to that false goddess “Progress. ”□
