“IT WOULD be very bad if the state sent us a superintendent,” claimed Board member Beverly Massie. She said it would be damaging to the system.
Montague moved that the Board reconsider the action taken by the Board in authorizing advertising for the combined position. “I do this because at the time I voted “aye.” I thought there would be a significant savings.” After reexamining the figures, Montague said he had changed his mind and further felt that consolidation would harm the system.
His motion to rescind the Board’s action passed, four to one, with Walter Masterson in opposition. Masterson moved that a search committee be allowed to look for a part-time superintendent and a part-time principal, noting that no one could be hired without action from the Board. His motion was defeated.
The crowd left and the meeting moved to the library. At 11:30, when the Board had finished their agenda, Beverly Massie asked for further direction. “What is the Search Committee searching for?” she asked.
MONTAGUE replied that the committee was only empowered to look for a full-time Superintendent.
Mrs. Massie moved that an additional committee formed to study the possibilities of combining administration positions and asked that the press take note that this was being done for the sole purpose of effecting economies without reducing the quality of education. The motion passed unanimously, and Montague appointed Stokes, Nichols and Arthlinda Quaintance to form the Committee to Find Combinations.□
