HELEN KILBY also spoke in support of principal Wingfield. “I was a school teacher under Mr. Wingfield for two years and he supported me 100 percent on discipline...We can’t count on the** schools to discipline a child who is not disciplined at home.” She added that her three children had been well prepared academically to continue their education by going through the Rappahannock school system. “I don’t think we should go away from here thinking we have such poor education in Rappahannock. I think it’s pretty good.”
“I don’t know what all the hullaballoo is about in the first place,” stated Granville Eastham. He maintained that having a meeting like Tuesday nights only hurt the image of the school system. “Since when do we challenge what the School Board does?” he asked.
If a student wants a quality education, Eastham maintained, he can get it in Rappahannock as well as in Fairfax or anywhere else. If he doesn’t want it, nothing is going to give it to him. “I think two people can handle the system as it is now,” said Eastham.
Montague was asked for a further clarification on the vote taken at the last meeting. Reading from the minutes, he said that Walter Masterson made a motion to advertise for the combined position, seconded by A.Y. Stokes. Arthlinda Quaintance and Paul Nichols voted nay, Masierson and Stokes voted aye and the chair also voted aye.
Montague pointed out that if the county couldn’t find a person approved by the state to fill the combined position, then the state would appoint someone.
