Luke asked real estate agents Carson Johnson and Roger Batcheldor if they knew of any land presently on the market that would be suitable for a landfill.
Batcheldor replied that he knew of none although he charged the county with “shucking responsibility” in opting for a privately owned landfill. “There’s a strong propensity for taking the easy way out,” he said. Batcheldor advised the Supervisors to take a couple of months and arrange for studies by soil scientists to find the best county land for the landfill site.
COMMONWEALTH’S Attorney George Davis supported Luke in his request for an executive session, claiming that a private discussion of the problem was more conducive to a calm, unemotional climate.
“I think I would feel safer having a landfill next to my property if the county owned it,” commented Patricia Helmer.
