Interested in ways to save energy while cooking? Meals prepared in a single appliance can save energy, cut electric bills and reduce preparation time. Making use of oven space, electric skillets, pressure cookers and slow cookers are four ways to save.

If planning to use the oven for one dish, why not use it for the whole meal? Beef roast, potatoes, carrots, baked apples and hot rolls can all be prepared with one oven heating. Place roast, quartered potatoes and sliced carrots in a dutch oven or roaster pan. Drop apples into a ten inch skillet, cake or pie pan, depending on the amoung needed.

Oven cooking time will depend on roast size and desired doneness. On the average, each pound of beef roast requires about 25 minutes cooking time in a 325 degree oven for medium doneness. Apples take about 45 minutes to bake, so adjust entry time accordingly. When the roast is taken out to slice, put precooked rolls in and turn oven off or turn oven to .375 degrees for uncooked rolls.

Next week I'll feature a recipe for an inexpensive skillet dinner.

A delicious dessert for your energy-conscious oven meal could be this delicious pound cake.
