Straw Beds For Criminals
Rappahannock’s seventh graders got a lesson on comparative criminal justice /when they visited the old Williamsburg jail. Debtors were imprisoned in relative comfort with a fireplace, indoor privy and bunk but those thrown in the clink for more serious crimes had to make do with the privy, a pile of straw and a little window with no pane—and no heat.
