Convicted
James Stewart Simpson of Culpeper was convicted of armed robbery in Rappahannock County Circuit Court on January 8. Simpson, tried without a jury, was found guilty by presiding Judge R. V. Snead. The Judge requested a presentence report to be heard March 12 prior to sentencing.
Simpson, along with David Payton Thompson, also of Culpeper, was charged by Trooper R.A. Baines for the armed robbery of Mr. Jefferson's Store in Sperryville on April 25. 1978. At that time Ronald Reynolds, proprietor of the store, was robbed at gunpoint of approximately $250.
Simpson and Thompson are also charged with murder and robbery in Culpeper and Orange counties. Thompson is in Chicago where he faces federal charges of kidnapping. according to Baines.
