The Virginia Tech Extension Information Office has compiled a list of toll-free numbers which the public can call for referral and educational information. All the following numbers can be reached in Virginia.
Virginia Office of Consumer Affairs—1-800-5529963. It attempts to aid those who have consumer complaints against a private business or state agency. It attempts to refer the caller to a helpful source in his or her locality.
State Corporation Commission—1-800-552-9760. It has appropriate branches to handle complaints about auto, life, or health insurance; corporation information; electric, gas, water or sewer problems; telephone inquiries; and banking practices.
Virginia Council for the Deaf—1-800-552-7917. It acts as a referral agency, providing such information as to where possible employment may be found or where special education may be provided. It will provide an interpreter if a person needs a lawyer.
Office of Employee Relations—1-800-552-9720. It provides advice to those employees who believe they have grievances against their employers.
State Office of Emergency and Energy Services—1-800552-3831. It provides information on how to conserve energy on the road or at home. It also provides carpool information in the Richmond area.
Virginia Lawyer Referral Service—1-800-552-7977, It refers callers to lawyers and agencies which can help them with their problems. A lawyer to whom a caller is referred can only charge a maximum fee of $15 for the first 30 minutes of consultation before a regular fee can be charged.
Medical College of Virginia—1-800-552-7600. It provides tape recordings concerning specific or general health problems. Will provide brochures to patients from other hospitals who call the number.
Veteran’s Hotline—1-800542-5826. It provides information concerning benefits.
State Board of Elections—1-800-552-9745. It provides information concerning qualifications for registering and voting as well as information on qualifications to run for various offices.
Developmental Disabilities Protection and Advocacy Office, better known as Office of Human Resources—1-800-552-3962. It answers questions concerning the legal rights of the handicapped in such areas as education, employment and benefits.
Welfare Child Protection Services—1-800-552-70%. It handles calls concerning suspected cases of child abuse or neglect.
Welfare Food Stamp Program—1-800-552-3431. It provides information as to qualifications to those seeking food stamps.
Internal Revenue Service—1 -800-552-9500. It handles calls concerning questions regarding the federal income tax.
There also are several national numbers which may prove helpful.
