died), or anger (for some of us our own angry feelings are frightening and therefore painful).
Tears have been viewed as a beginning step in both physical and emotional healing. When a person loses a limb, an arm or leg, in an accident, there is the physical pain associated with loss. Crying acknowledged this distress. Many have found that they are more relaxed after a good cry - refreshed and ready to carry on with the adjustments which are now needed because of the change in their lives.
Tears may well be nature’s way of getting us the attention we need-either from ourselves or from others. Have you been really uptight, have you been unable to relax enough to carry on your life’s work to your satisfactions? Maybe you need to take the time for a good cry. If you need help releasing your tears, try slicing an onion.
If you have felt emotional pain or distress for some time and have not found relief from a good cry, perhaps talking with a trusted friend, your minister, or a counselor at the Rappahannock Mental Health Clinic would help. The Clinic’s emergency answering service can put you in touch with a counselor at any time of the day or evening, just call 675-3329.
