Taxes were collected on 272,687,268 gallons of automotive fuels for August, an increase of 18,975,740 gallons over July, but a decrease of 12,028,398 gallons or 4.4 per cent, compared to August 1978.

Collections do not reflect gasoline consumption at the pump since the nine cents per gallon tax is paid to the Commonwealth at the wholesale level. These funds are deposited in the state’s Highway Maintenance and Construction Fund.
