By the time we arrived at Dominion Roller-Skating Rink for the Special Olympians Skating Party, the kids from the six area counties were already on the floor in full force. Gazing over the 175 children, teeps and adults, it was hard to distinguish those identified as “handicapped” from their volunteers and teachers. All we noticed were the whirling bodies, flying skates and (sometimes!) contorted faces of the skaters as they passed by.
The excitement in the air was contagious and we feverishly pitched our shoes and scrambled for our skates. After helping put the laces through umpteen dozen holes, the Rappahannock contingent made its way to the floor, the teachers clinging to their charges as tigjitly as their charges clung to them. After a few rounds of frustrated falls, the announcers told us to clear the floor, the “performers” were ready.
What a treat! In addition to the skating privilege, we were fortunate enough to be entertained by two semiprofessional competitive skaters, Sharon Wyatt and Steve Forestner.
