The Department of Housing and Urban Development has declared the town of Washington as physically and economically distressed.

The announcement carried in the October . 30 Federal Register lists Washington along with 119 Virginia communities of including The Plains in Fauquier County, Berryville in Clarke County, Luray and Orange as meeting “distressed” criteria on income, population, housing and development.

As a result of the designation, Washington may be eligible for a Urban Development Action Grant designed “to assist severly distressed cities and urban counties in revitalizing their stagnating economies and reclaiming deteriorated neighborhoods.” Under the program, qualifying communities can use Federal funds to stimulate new, or increased, private investment.

According to a HUD official, action grants depend on “substantial private commitment to increase the tax base and employment opportunities in a community.”
