water. Gradually add water to other ingredients. Cook over low heat until thick—color and knead when cool. Gingerbread cookies are fun for children if they don’t become frustrated from handling sticky dough that won’t do what they want it to. Carolyn Manwaring says this is not a sticky dough and is good for children to work with.
Gingerbread Cookies
1 cup molasses
1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
» egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoons soda
Vi cup hot water
6 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
Vt teaspoon ginger J
V* teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Simmer molasses and shortening together for 15 min. Cream sugar, egg and vanilla. Dissolve soda in hot water and add to sugar and egg. Add all of this to molasses and shortening. Sift together dry ingredients and add to other mixture, stir until flour is well mixed. Roll thin and cut with cookie cutter. Bake 10 min. at 375 degrees.
