At the December 6 board meeting, the Rappahannock supervisors unanimously approved the transfer of $23,500 from the county’s general fund to the welfare department’s fuel assistance program.
The program is designed to help needy families in meeting rising fuel costs. Local expenditures will be reimbursed by the state.
Welfare director Elizabeth Buntin reported that 55 households had already applied for assistance. “We had to hire someone to take applications,” she said, noting that without extra personnel, the welfare department couldn’t meet the five day time limit for processing applications. She estimated administrative costs as $3,100 for the four months, December-March, in which the program runs.
In Rappahannock, $20,000 will be available to participants in the fuel assistance program, according to Mrs. Buntin. The maximum amount that an eligible household can receive is $200 with payment made directly to fuel suppliers.
She told the supervisors that heads of households receiving supplemental security income (SSI) are’ automatically eligible for fuel assistance. “There are 261 SSI -recipients in Rappahannock but not all of them are heads of households,” Mrs. Buntin added.
