For applicants who are not receiving SSI, the welfare department examines income for the previous 90 days in order to determine eligibility.
For a single person, income must not exceed S4.250; for a couple, income must be below $5,625 and for a family of four, the ceiling is $8,375, according to fuel assistance program guidelines.
Mrs. Buntin estimated “front money” needs for payment to fuel suppliers as $3,500 in December, $10,000 to $11,000 in January, $6,000 in February and $4,000 in March.
Poor people are really feeling the crunch of inflation,” she said. According to Mrs. Buntin, most of the applicants in Rappahannock for the fuel assitance program are elderly or on fixed incomes. “These people are really hurt,” she maintained.
The supervisors voted unanimously to transfer $23,500 to the welfare budget with the understanding that the funds will be reimbursed by the state.
“Suppose the state doesn’t send the money?” questioned supervisor H. B. Wood.
"They’ve assured us they have the funds,” Mrs. Buntin ^replied.
The supervisors also agreed ‘ to name a replacement in January for retiring welfare board member Carter White who will attend his last meeting, on December 21.
