Last week’s 4-H day camp at Hazel River offered county youngsters a great opportunity for summer fun. At the end of five activitypacked days, they boarded the bus for home, arms loaded with crafts, heads full of new ideas and bodies tired and suntanned from hours spent swimming, canoeing, firing arrows at the archery range, fishing and playing baseball.
The annual 4-H camp, is sponsored by the VPI extension office, is a masterpiece in community cooperation. This year, particularly, everyone pulled together. With the departure of home agent Nancy Secrist coming just a few weeks before camp, organization responsibility fell on the shoulders of county agent Rap Owings. But he gave full credit for this year’s success to his volunteer helpers, Elsie Gheen and Carolyn Manwaring. "May name’s on the program as camp director but it really should be theirs,” he acknowledged.
