To the editor:
The Farmers’ Market deserves the attention of your newspaper. This is a struggling, hopeful young enterprise, designed to provide a means for local persons to buy and sell fresh produce and homemade. goods.
To make this a viable market, we need both buyers and sellers. A handful of dedicated persons, both vendors and customers, have been devoting long hours in preparing goods, delivering to market, and contributing in many other ways.
The market has a chance of success. It is basically a sound idea. It fulfills a real need. It encourages the agricultural and hand craft industries, so appropriate to our area. It can save local people the cost of travelling out of the county for supermarket produce. It also provides a pleasant meeting place for friends and neighbors on Saturday mornings.
It will be a long time before the Farmers’ Market enables vendors to gain a financial profit—at present it’s a community service. A few more vendors willing to be patient about profit, and a few more customers willing to search for the turnoff from 211 beside the Farmers Coop on Saturday morning from 9 - 1, and the Farmers’ Market will be on its way tcu
becoming a Rappahannock* institution.
