Givon Parsons of Washington hooked more than he bargained for last week in his farm pond behind the Rappahannock Recreation Center.
“I was actually fishing for snapping turtles, trying to clean my pond out," Parsons said. He pulled in the set line with its chicken gizzard bait after spotting the Clorox bottle marker bouncing up and down, and was surprised with a three-foot long eel.
"1 didn't know there were eels around here. I just never saw one that big before,” he said, .displaying the trophy all skinned and gutted and soaking in brine.
According to Parsons, eels are salt water fish, all from the Bermuda Triangle area in the Caribbean. “They travel back to fresh water like a salmon does," he reported.
