It's back to the drawing board with plans for Sperryville’s sewer system. In an emergency meeting of the Rappahannock Water and Sewer Authority on Tuesday, chairman Maury Biddle announced that cost estimates for the lagoon-type treatment facility and collection system have climbed from the original $850,000 projected three years ago to $2.3 million.
“We’re short almost $1 million,” said Biddle. "The cost has almost tripled with inflation. There’s no way we can ask the people of Sperryville to come up with their share.”
But, he emphasized, Sperryville will get a treatment facility to clean up the existing health hazard, ranked fifth in the state, caused by raw sewage pouring into the Thornton River from malfunctioning septic fields throughout the community.
‘‘We’re going to get a sewer system but it’s going to be a while yet...It’s the Water and Sewer Authority’s policy that we’re going to put a sewer system in Sperryville and it’s going to cost the people of Sperryville as little as possible,” Biddle emphasized.
According to Robert Demer, representative from the engineering firm now assigned to the project, the overrun is due partially to inflation and partially to the “very, very optimistic” cost estimates that were originally made by the first engineers on the job.
