Virginians used 5.4 per cent less gasoline in May of this year, but failed for the first time since January to meet voluntary consumption target figures as set by the Department of Energy (DOE).
Virginia motorists purchased 226,430,000 gallons in May, 5.4 per cent less than the 239,258,000 gallons purchased in May 1979, according to OEES figures.
Consumption in May exceeded the federal target by only 0.1 per cent. Other than in January 1980, Virginia has met the targets for all other months. These reductions enable the state to come under the DOE targets by 1.6 per cent on a cumulative basis.
Earlier this year, OEES reported reductions of 3.1 per cent, 5.1 per cent, 13.0 per cent and 7.3 per cent for January, February, March and April of this year, compared to corresponding months in 1979.
More stringent target figures have been released by DOE, however, for the remainder of the year. Nationally, the new targets call for an average reduction of nearly 5 per cent between July and December.
