With her husband John, pastor of the Promised Land Baptist Church in Gid Brown Hollow, Mrs. Pendleton was instrumental in setting up the Cancer Society’s educational series, convincing pastors of other black churches to provide meeting space. The first of the programs was held six months ago at her husband’s church.
But Mrs. Pendleton gave the credit for the success of the educational effort to Juanda Rodgers, former president of the Rappahannock unit of the American Cancer Society. “If it hadn’t been for Mrs. Rodgers, none of this would have happened,” she said. Mrs. Rodgers reminded her that Rappahannock’s black citizens give each year to the Cancer Crusade fund raising drive but rrarely take advantage of educational programs and clinics. “Why don’t you get your money’s worth?
