Mrs. Alice Washington Coates Verner, 85, of Washington, died Wednesday, May 25, 1988, at Culpeper Memorial Hospital.
Horn on April 21, 1898 in Washington, Va. she was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Nellie Compton Coates. Mrs. Verner was Deputy Treasurer of Rappahannock County for many years until she retired in 19(10. She was a charter member of The Eastern Star No. 215 and the White Shrine of Jerusalem No. 89 in Charleston, West Virginia.
•Survivors include two daughters, Mary V. Updike of Washington and Elizabeth V. Jenkins of Suffolk; one step-daughter, Phyllis J. Verner of Washington; a brother, James Edward Coates of Roanoke; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted on Friday, May 27, at 11 a.m. at the Washington Masonic Cemetery by the Rev. Jennings Hobson, Rev. Steven N. Scoggin and Rev. John K. Burke, Jr.
Moody Funeral Service in Culpeper was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Calvin Racer, Tom Taylor, Clarence Giles, Jr., Jonas Alther, Clifton Jenkins and Bill Fletcher,
