The Rappahannock supervisors have likewise included a five percent raise in the proposed budget for county employees over whom they hold direct salary control. However, at the same time, they exercised categorical control over the school budget to keep pay raises for administrators at three percent and all other school employees at four percent.
What kind of message on priorities does that send to our children?
On one hand, students, teachers, administrators, the whole public education system, is being criticized for producing an inferior product. On the other hand, those in power are signaling that priorities relating to education rank low on the list.
At the local, state and national level, we’d better step back and reassess the message that we’re trying to get across. In effect, what we’re saying now to our young people and their teachers is: YOU give education a high priority because we won’t.
With that message being flashed by our leaders at every level of government, how many young people are going to want to grow up to be teachers? How many are going to work hard enough to gain the skills necessary to be good teachers? And where will that leave our educational programs for the next generation?
