Herbert Samuel Barksdale, 83, of Flint Hill, died Saturday, May 28, in Warren Memorial Hospital.
The unofficial mayor of Flint Hill and a lifelong public servant, Mr. Barksdale has been described as “utterly fair,” “a real Christian” and “someone everybody respects.” For over a half a century, he gave freely of his time, energy and talents to religious, civ c and governmental groups.
Mr. Barksdale was born September 30, 1899, a Red Hill in Albemarle County, the son of John Oscai and Merry Lewis Barksdale. A resident of Rappahannock since 1927, he was the husband of the late Lucy R. Barksdale.
County agent in Rappahannock for 3'/■> years, he also taught agriculture to World War II veterans in Fauquier County. He was chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Committee here for 26 years and a member of the Rappahannock County Farm Bureau since its inception. He was tl(e director representing Rappahannock County on tie Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District aid also represented Rappahannock on the board of directors for Front Royal Southern States Cooperative fjr several years. In addition, he was the chief contrifcitor and fundraiser from Rappahannock for the new 1H
center in Harmony Hollow. j
