To the editor:
The woman who recently wrote to Andropov complaining about Reagan’s position on a nuclear freeze based her views on the fact that as a Christian country, our foreign policies should reflect the teachings of Jesus. Rut America is not a “Christian” nation and has not been since the First Amendment to the Constitution was written. We are officially a country with no established religion—one in which every religion can flourish or fail, the idea being that God can and will help those which most fit with Her spiritual ecology.
She should also realize that the nuclear freeze movement was already coopted as the peace movement as long ago as the 19ti0’s and is in reality a battlefield for every sort of undercover spook and cold war propagandist. It is objectionable primarily, however, because it has ripped off women’s consciousness, and stolen feminist momentum. Instead of “Women for Equal Rights," it now seems to be “Women for Peace and Security".
Andropov is not a personal dictator of Russian foreign policy, as she implies in her letter to him, but must do what the Communist Party dictates. There is no way on earth that people like Reagan and the American military industrial com
