Mr. Barksdale put his agricultural expertise » good use on the Rappahannock county Planning Com mission. He was a member for 19 years, serving al chairman for 15 years. Under his leadership, the couni tv’s zoning and subdivision ordinances were developed with an emphasis on preserving Rappahannock’s rural character and heritage while providing for orderly! growth. He was the planning commission’s represen-', tative on the board of zoning appeals, a member of thel board of real estate appraisers from 1968 to 1974 and \ chairman of the equalization board in 1982. He also 1 held a number of temporary committee appointments 1 pertaining to local government and schools.
Mr. Barksdale was a member of the Rappahannock County Democratic Committee for more than 30 years and an election judge in Flint Hill for 35 years.
He was a member of the Flint Hill United Methodist Church where he served as steward since 1930. treasurer since 1933, superintendent of the Sunday school since 1938 and chairman of the administrative board since 1941.
Mr. Barksdale was a charter member of the P'lint Hill Volunteer Fire Department and for 29 years, served as president, the only president that the fire company has had since its organization.
He was also a director of the Rappahannock National Bank.
Surviving are a brother, John H. Barksdale, of North Garden, and three sisters, Irene B. Allen and Mary B. Allen, both of Charlottesville, and Mildred B. Higgs of Staunton.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 31, at the Flint Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Merlin B. Shorb officiating. Burial was in the Flint Hill Methodist Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were J. W. Fletcher, W. J. Curtis, Earl Duvall, B. J. Wood, T. V. Williams, Dr. Edwin Eastham, Aubrey North and Emory Russell, members of the Flint Hill Fire Department were honorary pallbearers.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Flint Hill Methodist Church.
Leland Weakley
Culpeper Resident
Leland Maxwell Weakley, 69, of Culpeper, died Saturday, May 28, 1983, at Culpeper Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services were conducted on Tuesday at the Fairview Cemetery in Culpeper by the Rev. Jerry Hughes.
Mr. Weakley was retired from the Printz Lumber Company and was a member of Etlan United Methodist Church. His parents were the late Joseph T. and Eva Reeves Thornhill Weakley.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Herndon Weakley of Culpeper; two sons, Robert A. Weakley of Hampton and James T. Weakley of Yorktown; two sisters, Mrs. Fred Lamb of Culpeper and Mrs. Edna Bauserman of Bromo Bluff; three brothers, Kenneth Weakley of Culpeper, Floyd Weakley of Remington and John Weakley of Luray and eight grandchildren.
Clore Funeral Home in Culpeper was in charge of arrangements.
