Franklin Clyde Baggarly writes in The History of the Town of Washington, Virginia The First Washington of All that “It is without question and an undenied fact that Washington, Virginia was and is the only town in the Blue Ridge Mountains, of the then Culpeper County and now Rappahannock County, that is surveyed, platted and laid off into lots, streets and boundaries.” Washington is credited with naming the streets, also, and Mary Elizabeth Hite in My Rappahannock Storybook wrote that “...Gay Street, it is said, he named for his sweetheart Gay Fairfax.”
