As for the third item, whatever the governor’s plans may be, both the speech and the program it conveyed would have to be considered an impressive plus. This, of course, is Robb’s last year in office, and although he will deliver next year’s State of the Commonwealth address, last week’s speech is generally considered his most important.
Was it a swan song or a launching pad?
From its tone, manner and content, the guess here is that it was more the latter than the former. Knowing Chuck Robb, it is highly unlikely that his longrange future is as much Up in the air as he would like to have us think it is. Furthermore, it is equally unlikely that events are not already in train setting the stage for that future, whatever it maybe.
Only the governor and providence—and perhaps Lynda— know what these plans are, and Robb plays his cards so closely to his chest that he may even have providence confused.
Still, as Bill Truban said, that speech had a national flavor about it, and Robb clearly seems happy in this line of executive work.
