If some people question whether or not George Washington did survey the town, there is no such room for doubt on the matter of which town of Washington in the United States was the first to claim the name. Washington, Va. was established as a township by the General Assembly in November of 1796, and is recognized as the first of about 28 other towns in the United States named Washington.
In 1796, the town was made up of 25 acres of land owned by John Calvert, James Jett, Jr. and James Wheeler. The trustees of the town were John Strother, James Green, Edward Pendleton, Charles Browning and John Jett. The reason for the 47 year delay in establishing Washington
