ll/Onuiiueu irom rage i ; took the early lead in the 2-mile ladies’ timber race with Splashy Lea, Ahwaz and Sirocco following.
As the field went up the side of the mountain for the final time Splashy Lea took the lead and held it approaching the last fence.
But then Handy Hill once again moved to the front and as the field came around the final sharp uphill turn into the stretch the race appeared wide open.
Ms. Cassel tucked down and dug in on Splashy Lea, urging the little mare to perform her legendary stretch run, and the pair sped along the outside of the stretch past Handy Hill.
Only Dave Rollison’s Ahwaz, ridden by Eva Dahlgren, could challenge Splashy Lea but was not able to close the gap, finishing a length behind at the wire.
“Running back to back like she did, Splashy did really well,” said Ms. Cassel after the race. “She’s a dynamite little horse. I was really surprised because she doesn’t usually like short races.”
Racing began at the Thornton Hill Farm course with a short flat race split into two divisions.
