something bigger, and we looked for a year - but Pat was particular.” Everytime they found a house for sale, Pat, with his construction experience, found something which to him, made it unsuitable.

“Then,” she said, “we saw this house.” When Camille describes how the house looked at the time, it requires a lot of imagination as a visitor looks around at the raised garden beds highlighting the neatly clipped yard; and inside the old wood floors and plaster walls freshly waxed and painted.

“The field was overgrown, the shutters were hanging off the windowframes, the screens were full of holes. The house had not had anything done to it in years - It needed a lot of work,” she adds, the tone of understatement evident in her voice and smile.

But, she talked Pat into visiting the house. “He looked at the trim, jumped up and down on the floors, banged on the walls - and nothing went anywhere. He banged on the newel post at the base of the stairway - and it didn’t move. He looked at me and said, ‘Gee, this is a pretty solid old house,” she said, smiling as she remembers Pat’s reaction.

“Pat took a big gulp,” Camille admitted, “because he knew he was going to do all the work.” But, she added, “I learned how to clean when we bought this house.”

She described the restoration as “a walk back in time,” as they stripped layer after layer of paper
