parted, they said jokingly that they’d stop back to check on me later - “just in case.”
Their words were prophetic: As the minutes became hours, my predicament worsened. My wife would surely be distressed at my disappearance, but dare I try to find a phone to call her and risk missing the wrecker? How does a 6 foot 3 inch, 230 pound man “sleep” in an auto? And, what about dinner, anyway?
Finally, at 12:30 a.m., after an evening full of arrests, Deputies Brown and Jackson returned, true to their word. They told me that my wife had called the Sheriffs office, and that they assured her I was safe. Then they asked me if I wanted a ride home.
I guess that because of my preoccupation with how to pass the night in a small car on an empty stomach and perhaps some prior experience with “big city” police officers, I never expected such an offer...but I certainly didn’t waste any time accepting it! During the 12-mile trip home, we laughed about my evening’s experiences, and I took the opportunity to catch up on the law
