The Sheriffs emergency log in the July 9 edition of the Rappahannock News carried the entry, “July 5: public service, Rt. 211 Amissville.” As the face behind the entry, I’d like to tell you just how important that “public service” was tome.
I left my home on Rt. 627 for my “other” home in Takoma Park, Md. early in the evening, sated with a weekend of fireworks, food and festivities. I made it as far as the intersection of Rts. 211 and 689 in Amissville, when my car broke down. A neighbor drove me to his house, and I called AAA road service. The voice on the other end of the line assured me that help would be there within 20 minutes, “30 minutes at the most.” I returned to my car, cursing the breakdown, but confident that I’d soon be able to resume my trip home.
I waited in my car from 8:15 to 9:40 p.m., when Deputies Todd Brown and Ray Jackson arrived to “check me out.” I told them of my travail, and they volunteered to call AAA again. This time the news was more heartening: The wrecker was on its way. When the officers de
