Overall the band received an 82.7 rating, which is excellent on a scale of superior, excellent, good and honorable mention. Only Red Oak High School with close to 200 members surpassed them with a higher score of 91.7. The RCHS band was awarded a first place trophy in the novice division.
Scott said she thought the competition would be a learning experience, and so it was “doubly nice to win.” When she took the job as band director last year, Scott said she “would take it slow and be successful.”
The trip was arranged with Super Holiday Tours in Orlando, Fla. The band visited Planet Hollywood for a breakfast buffet and the Medieval Times, a dinner theatre, where they watched a jousting tournament. A day at Coco Beach included a catered barbecue.
A few children had never been out of Virginia before going to Florida and about a half dozen had never seen the ocean, said Scott. The students had several days to visit Disneyworld, which was not crowded, and the weather was pleasantly warm, Corbin said. She added that the students’ behavior and manners were commendable.
Chaperones accompanying the band were Corbin, Molly Welch, David and Gracie Gillis, Helen Williams and Scott. Scott thanked Jack Raines, principal of the Rappahannock County High School, for his help in putting together the trip
