ily name of the flycatcher family is “Tyrant Flycatchers.” The kingbird is a tyrant indeed. No other bird, small or large is tolerated in his territory. The kingbird will not hesitate to attack a crow or hawk many times his size.
The kingbird is a strikingly marked bird being white on the throat and breast, black on the head and back, with a distinct white band to the tip of the tail. As I drive along country roads, a kingbird often darts up and flies alongside the car with quivering wing tips.
Peterson describes a kingbird’s vocal output as “....a rapid sputter of high bickering notes: dzee-dzee, dzee.... also a nasal dzeeb.” I can’t improve on that except to comment that kingbird seems to be saying; “Don’t mess with me!”
No indeed, I would not like to be a hawk venturing over a kingbird’s nesting territory. It would be like an attack by a well-armed, fast flying, persistent and very large mosquito.
