Butler grew up in Culpeper County near the Rappahannock County line, and at 17 he left to join the Air Force. Later he joined the Secret Service to work with the White House Police, and he retired in 1985. For five years he worked as a building contractor, then at a security-related job in Middleburg and last winter he began renovating the apple stand. Recently, his wife, Becky, quit her federal government job at Fort Belvoir to join the family business. Besides Stefanie, the Butlers have two sons, Doug, who is a fireman in Fairfax, and Greg, who is a deputy sheriff in Culpeper County.
Stefanie, 31, grew up in Fauquier County, and in 1981 her parents bought a 53-acre farm in Boston. She graduated from Culpeper County High School, and although she attended George Mason University for a short time, she was not interested in college. She married Ricky Shaw from Washington in October 1992, and one month later they bought the Exxon station in Sperryville with his parents, James and Jean Shaw.
