The Tbwn of Washington’s upcoming Fourth of July celebration has a special highlight this year with the design of its own commemorative postmark which will be stamped on mail bought to a special booth along Gay Street during the day-long vendor’s craft show.
The special cancellation postmark, sponsored by the Town of Washington, was created by Tanya Richey at the request of U.S. Postmaster Linda Butler. It depicts the village with the town’s name and date of July 4, 1998. The postmark, which is especially interesting for stamp collectors, is valid for the one date of July 4.
Framed drawings of the pictorial postmark are on sale at the Tanya Richey Studio and Windflower Gallery located on the comer of Main Street and Piedmont Avenue.
In addition to the U.S. Postal Service booth, there will be several dozen other vendors displaying their crafts. One of them is Peter Scott of Castleton who is a caricaturist and will be drawing from his booth throughout the day. The Eagle Scouts will be doing fingerprint demonstrations in which they will take fingerprints and put them on a card. “They’re not going to send them to the FBI,” laughed Charlie Tompkins,
