university level.

The grading system is criterion-referenced with each student’s performance measured against well-defined levels of achievement that remain consistent from one examination session to the next. The standards are applied equally to all participating schools. Responsibility for all academic judgements about the quality of a candidate’s work rests with more than 2,100 examiners worldwide, led by chief examiners with international authority. A variety of assessment methods is used to evaluate both the content and the process of a student’s academic achievements and take into account different learning styles and cultural patterns.

In North America, eight Canadian provinces and 32 states and the District of Columbia participate in the program. In the U.S., only California, with 37, and Florida, with 30, exceed Virginia, with 16, in the number of schools participating. Top universities across the continent report receiving increasing numbers of applications from IB diploma graduates.
