She expressed her appreciation to Dr. David Gangel, superintendent of Rappahannock County Schools, for his support for the band program and for allotting $2,000 for the band, besides the $5,800 allowed in the budget. Previously, the Band Boosters had paid for everything, said Scott. The Band Boosters helped to pay for new uniforms and instruments including a $3,200 tuba (with the school’s help), bari saxophone, euphonium, French horn and other brass instruments. In the past two years the Band Boosters have raised $25,000.
Thirty-seven of the 46 students in the band in grades eight to 12 went on the trip from May 27 to June 1. Each student raised $225 to pay his or her own way. Band Booster sales of $14,000 in citrus fruit financed the trip. The Lions’ Club donated $1,000 for the trip and Faith Mountain donated $750 last spring for the band to purchase new instruments.
Scott recognized a few students for outstanding performance since they only recently began playing their instruments. They are Josh McArthur on the bells, Matthew Ralston on tuba, Jenny Starr on the French horn and Lucy Burnham, Australian exchange student, on tenor sax who was new to the band.
Plans for next year include a spring competition at Pops in the Park to be held in Hershey Park, Pa.
