LPT results
Assistant elementary school principal Richard Smith reported the results of the final literacy passport test. The LIT has been replaced by the state’s new Standards of Learning tests which were administered for the first time this past spring. Of the 78 sixth grade students who took the test, 73 percent passed all three parts, compared to 79 percent the year before, and 83 percent passed the writing portion, 92 percent passed math, and 93 percent passed reading. According to Smith, those students who did not pass all three sections are “still accountable” under the program and must pass the tests in order to graduate.
Charter schools
Board members Rosa Crocker and Makela outlined the new state requirements for establishing charter schools. “This is coming to us by vote of the state legislature,” Makela noted. The board has the option of accepting applications from individuals or organizations who want to operate a charter school or, alternatively, deciding that the county will not have any charter schools. All costs for the charter schools must be covered by the county school budget. Religious or home schools cannpt be converted to charter schools without formally reestablishing themselves.
The board voted to table the issue for 30 days and allow the public to comment at the July 14 meeting.
