Michael Rose had no idea what an ordeal Aug. 9 would turn out to be for him and his family. Rose, of Berryville, was hiking up White Oak Canyon in Shenandoah National Park with his sister and his two sons that Sunday. The group hiked up to the lower waterfall and while there Rose slipped on a wet boulder, tumbled over and bounced down the rocks 30 feet onto the hard stream bed below.
The fall broke his right hip, shattering it in places. His sons ran back down the trail to get help while Rose’s sister stayed with him.
They talked to rangers who were at the end of the trail just inside the park collecting fees. It took some time for them to notify park personnel and for help to get to Rose. Janice Pauley, park medic, was the first of the rescue personnel from the park to arrive on the scene. Other
