area rescue personnel who heard the call arrived soon after. They worked to keep Rose as warm as possible while waiting for additional rescue personnel to arrive with equipment. A wool blanket, space blanket (chrome reflective) and watch cap, were used to keep Rose warm in the water and prevent hypothermia from setting in. They managed to keep Rose stable until others arrived.
The problem then became how to get him out without further injury. His injuries were so severe that even the motion of ripples in the water, created by rescue workers moving around him, was painful to Rose.
They managed to get him immobilized and carry him down the mountain one and one half miles. The Shenandoah Technical Rescue Team brought Rose out of the area. They used ropes to lower him down the first half mile.
